Japanese education system include 6 years in elementary school, 3 years in middle school, 3 years in high school and 4 years in college.

Only elementary schools and middle schools are compulsory education, but about 99% of students enter high schools.

Kindergartens are not part of compulsory schooling, but almost 100% of children attend either kindergartens or nursery schools.

Not all schools have school uniforms.

Sometimes, a well-designed school uniform can increase popularity of the school.

They sometimes have school rules that stipulate length of hair, the way to tie your hair and the length of skirt.

受験

入学試験は英語で an entrance exam、受験することは take an entrance exam と言います。

Entrance exam race is not only for getting in the universities, but also for private elementary schools, middle schools and all types of high schools. Sometimes there is one for kindergartens.

The goal of education system in Japan has been to obtain well-paid job with big companies. In today’s Japan with widening disparity, the chances of reaching that goal has become slim for many students. But many parents are not aware of the change in social trend, thus pushing their children into continuing examination wars.

If you fail entrance exams to colleges or universities, you will attend a cram school for a year to take the exams again next year.
